The film introduces Clara (Mackenzie Foy) as she demonstrates her latest invention – some kind of Rube Goldberg mouse-ensnaring machine – and then broadens to waltz and whirl through a vision of kitsch Christmas Victoriana. But the bones of ETA Hoffmann’s original story, The Nutcracker and the Mouse King, have been stripped down and reshaped, with grim efficiency, to fit the template of the Disney princess narrative. It also contains a dance sequence featuring Misty Copeland, a principal at American Ballet Theatre. And then they made one of the key plot points the total cliche "all you need is inside of you." Could you possibly shoot anymore for the common denominator with that one? This movie makes it hard to point out anything they did right, which honestly may just be the fact that Morgan Freeman is in it.T his sparkly, spangly fantasy shares a name and some musical motifs with Tchaikovsky’s ballet. And I understand trying to "shake things up," and giving a classic a new feel, but who greenlit the idea to make the mouse kind not a mouse but a swarm of mice that collectively together make one giant mouse.AND THEN MAKE HIM AN ALLIE IN THE END?! Ban that man from cinema altogether. Where was the wonderment.the magic that made you feel like a kid again that this story brings with it? Much like Wrinkle in Time, they pumped a ton of money into the CGI department with hopes of stunning you with amazing colorful scenes, but forgot to deliver the captivating story to go with it, leaving you with a movie that is better as a baby sensory video. I have trouble even trying to quantify what they were trying to go for this film. Oh Nutcracker, where do I start? This, for me, was a top 3 biggest disappointing movies of the year. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I think kids will like it and parents will like it or be indifferent. And though the story is flawed, it isn't bad. The movie's not perfect, but it's all about the experience. Her struggles are solidly delivered, but they spend so much time on it at expense of the world-building. A little too much time is spent on throwing Clara from plot point to plot point. Also, we could've spent more time exploring and experiencing the Realms. The Four Realms and its current threat could've been a lot clearer. The main character Clara experiences a by-the-numbers getting over the death of a parent and learning to believe in them-self story-line. Admittedly, the film is a little weak in the plot department. Unfortunately, those three are not as well-utilized as they could be, especially considering that the Nutcracker is one of the main characters. There are a couple of fairly funny guards and the Nutcracker himself is likable. Keira Knightly is fun in a quirky over-the-top performance. Admittedly the fantasy characters are more interesting. There are some clever design ideas, especially in the Land of Amusements. The whole thing looks great with deeply detailed sets, costumes, and makeup that evoke a classic fantasy feel. Though I admit the film could've been stronger in parts, I was still entertained. There are some clever design ideas, especially in the Land of Reviews seem really divided on this. Clara and Phillip must brave the ominous Fourth Realm, home to the tyrant Mother Ginger (Helen Mirren), to retrieve Clara’s key and hopefully return harmony to the unstable world. It’s there that Clara encounters a soldier named Phillip (Jayden Fowora-Knight), a gang of mice and the regents who preside over three Realms: Land of Snowflakes, Land of Flowers and Land of Sweets. A golden thread, presented to her at godfather Drosselmeyer’s (Morgan Freeman) annual holiday party, leads her to the coveted key-which promptly disappears into a strange and mysterious parallel world. It’s there that Clara All Clara (Mackenzie Foy) wants is a key – a one-of-a-kind key that will unlock a box that holds a priceless gift. Summary: All Clara (Mackenzie Foy) wants is a key – a one-of-a-kind key that will unlock a box that holds a priceless gift.
