8/9/2023 0 Comments Define firmamentHer hands rest on one side of the earth and her legs on the other, and Shu, the god of air, stretches his hands in the air to hold her up. In Egypt, the sky is pictured as the goddess Nut, with stars all over her body. In Sumerian mythology, An is the god of the sky/firmament, whereas Enlil (literally, “Lord of Wind” ) is the god of what happens between the ground (controlled by En.Ki, “Lord of the Earth”) and the firmament. This belief in a solid firmament was standard among the people of the ANE, who distinguished between the “atmosphere” in which we live and the solid sky above. Ĭultural legends describing the dome are abundant enough to include arrows being shot into the firmament and lodging there (Japan, Native America, Chuckchee), adventurers climbing up to the sky (India), people climbing up through a hole in the firmament (Navaho) or tumbling down through one (Seneca), and heroes sailing a ship to the place where the sky meets the earth (Buriat), and where the firmament is so low that ship masts can end up scraping it. This understanding is so ubiquitous that some anthropologists consider it a “general human belief.” As Paul Seely, a Bible scholar who works on the intersection of ANE literature and science, writes: Apart from a scientific education, it is just too natural for people to think of the sky as something solid. This barrier is dome shaped, since we see the heavens above curving into the horizon and meeting the flat earth. Water doesn’t fall on us because something is holding it up, and that something is transparent, since we can see the blue hue of the liquid behind it. The sky is blue because it is full of water, like the sea. It is best understood as a product of the pre-scientific mind, attempting to make sense of what it sees and offering an intuitive, though factually incorrect, account. The idea of the sky above us as a solid structure is shared by almost all pre-modern human cultures. The idea of a firmament is entirely contradictory to modern planetary science yet there God is, in our Torah, spending all of creation day number two fashioning it. Gen 1:6 God said, "Let there be a firmament in the midst of the water, that it may separate water from water." 1:7 God made the firmament, and it separated the water which was below the firmament from the water which was above the firmament. If you can entertain this notion, and feel yourself underneath this massive curved wall of heaven, straining under the weight of the rainwater it holds back, then you are living on the earth our sages knew, for this is the world, the universe, of which the Bible conceived: בראשית א:ו וַיֹּאמֶר אֱלֹהִים יְהִי רָקִיעַ בְּתוֹךְ הַמָּיִם וִיהִי מַבְדִּיל בֵּין מַיִם לָמָיִם. This is what the Bible is describing when it refers to הָרָקִיעַ, traditionally rendered in English Bibles as “the firmament” (from the Latin firmamentum meaning “support”). Only try and picture it as a connecting point between two solids: a flat plate like earth, and a rigid dome like an upside down bowl that vaults it, blue as ocean, from the vast stores of water it contains. If you are unfamiliar with the firmament, then imagine for a moment the horizon, where the earth appears to meet with the sky. Of all the vexing problems modern cosmology poses for the first chapter of Genesis, such as the insufficient biblical timeline of 6 days (as opposed to billions of years) until the appearance of humans, or vegetative bloom before the sun and photosynthesis, the most acute for me is God’s creation of the firmament (רקיע rakia) on the second day.

8/9/2023 0 Comments Tabby point siamese rescueClassic: Also called the blotched tabby, the classic tabby cat has a pattern of swirls along the sides of their body.Tabby cats can be found in four distinct patterns: Skin cells of embryos that were 25 to 28 days old showed a color pattern comparative to the coloring of an adult tabby, all before the presence of hair follicles and pigment. While these cats are extremely popular, until recently, we’ve not known how these cats got their stripes.Ī 2021 study, first published by Nature Communications and reported by National Geographic, shows that the tabby pattern is visible in embryonic cells. The tabby pattern, which is in 80 percent of present-day cats, can be blotches, spots, stripes, or swirls. The tabby isn’t a separate breed but is actually a pattern seen in a cat’s coat. We love these chatty cats their intelligence and affectionate personalities. A genetic mutation resulted in the color-point coat of the Siamese cat, where there is a defined contract between the body and extremities. The Siamese is medium-sized with a short, soft coat. Today, cat associations favor the modern Siamese look. In contrast, the modern Siamese appears thin with a wedge-shaped head. The traditional Siamese, also called the Thai cat, Old-Style Siamese, or Wichien Maat, had a thicker body and a rounded head. Towards the 1960s, the Siamese began to take on a more slender look. The 1940s and 1950s say breeders experimenting with coat colors and patterns. These traits were considered undesirable by breeders, and selective breeding has reduced the crossed eyes and crooked tails once commonly found in this breed.Īs the breed’s popularity grew, so did interest in diversifying the breed. Despite legends offering other explanations, it is believed these traits resulted from genetic factors. It’s true that for a long time, many Siamese cats had crossed eyes and kinked tails. So diligent were the cats to their duty that their eyes became crossed from watching the goblet, and their tails became bent from wrapping the appendage around the goblet for extra security. Another legend says that a group of Siamese cats guarded a golden goblet. The felines were assigned the duty of guarding the king and would perch atop columns around the king’s throne, ready to attack anyone who tried to threaten the king. Legend says the Siamese were cherished temple cats to the King of Siam. The cat first appeared in a Thai manuscript around the 14th century, making it one of the oldest cat breeds worldwide. Fondly referred to as Meezers, this ancient breed is believed to have originated in what was once called Siam, known today as Thailand. The Lynx Point Siamese comes in color patterns, including blue, blue-cream, chocolate, chocolate-tortie, cream, lilac, lilac-cream, red, seal, and seal-tortie.Īs one of the most recognizable cat breeds in the world, the Siamese is known for their svelte bodies, colorpoint coats, wedge-shaped heads, and vibrant blue eyes. The Siamese Tabby mix has all of the characteristics we love about the Siamese cat-friendliness, intelligence, elegance, and vocality-mixed with the markings of the domestic tabby cat. The Colorpoint Shorthair breed is essentially the Siamese cat in additional coat colors and patterns outside the traditional four colors (blue, chocolate, lilac, and seal). Other registries, like the Cat Fanciers’ Association (CFA), do not recognize the lynx-point pattern in the Siamese breed and instead place this cat into a separate breed classification called the Colorpoint Shorthair. The International Cat Association (TICA) includes the Lynx Point Siamese in its Siamese breed standard. As a relatively new Siamese mix, cat breeder associations have debated on how to categorize this Siamese evolution. The Siamese Tabby mix is a cat of many names: Tabby Point Siamese, Lynx Point Siamese, and Lynx Colorpoint Shorthair. I believe this could be fixed either by merging the assets by linking them, but apparently even after a structure has been build the assets will still be considered independent even if grouped up. During my first parks to which I dedicated hours of decoration, I was using so many assets with the Create tool that my park started flickering because it couldn't handle all the assets at the same time. Overall everything worked well on PS5, but I did notice some dips when my park was getting significantly big, and after I finished my parks there were so many assets on screen that the frame rate dropped to what I would recognize as mid 30's returning to 50's when zoomed in. I believe Planet Coaster could benefit from an easy difficulty for kids since the theme is overall childish, but ends up not being so compelling towards kids outside of the create mode environment. I did not find the game very friendly towards players unfamiliar with tycoons and it's not the lack of tutorial content, but the game itself demanding some management skills after certain status is achieved. Theres a short video on the site that displays a lot of its functionality. It has a plugin system based on JavaScript, but doesn’t rely on. Soulver is a great scratch pad for math that allows you to write expressions in a very natural form, which makes it versatile and fun to use in many occasions. It supports currency & unit conversions, dates and times, percentages, time zones, variables and more. Parsify Desktop is the newest of the aforementioned apps. Soulver is a notepad calculator app for Mac & iPad. It also has a plugin system (based on JavaScript), although its quite limited - a plugin can only add new units, variables, and functions it cannot directly access the expression. Numi is newer and more compact, some will also find its design to be better. However, it lacks a custom plugin system. It has been on the market since 2005 and, thus, is a very polished product. Soulver is possibly the best notepad-based calculator out there. I do not consider my app to be the best and I encourage everyone to try all of the options below. In terms of yield, 1 tile of hydroponics is equivalent to 2.8 tiles of regular soil. If there's plenty of fertile soil, then hydroponics can be useful, but more limited in scope. Hydroponics are most useful if you have limited fertile grow space - whether your colony is inside a mountain, or in an extreme biome like a desert or ice sheet. (Toxipotatoes have a fertility sensitivity of 0% they grow no faster in hydroponics than they do in the ground). Of those, only psychoid receives any appreciable effect. Only psychoid plants and toxipotato plants can grow in a basin under pollution. However, most plants will rapidly die if the terrain becomes polluted, even in a basin. Pollution underneath does not lower the fertility of hydroponics. The following plants can be grown in hydroponics basins: Note that standing lamps aren't suitable for crop growth: plants require at least 51% light, while standing lamps provide a maximum of 50% lighting and do not "stack".Ĭolonists will automatically plant only 1 type of plant per basin. The sun lamp is required to provide light in the absence of sunlight (due to the roof). This isn't a problem in the growing season while outdoors, but in order to regulate temperature, you must grow indoors, under a mostly complete roof, and use buildings like a heater. Hydroponics only provides soil fertility, so all other plant growth conditions must be met. Each basin has a cleanliness value of -3, making a large hydroponics farm a very "dirty" prospect. They can't be uninstalled, only deconstructed for half their value as usual. This is absolutely critical, as when unpowered, its plants will wither very quickly. In order to function, they require 70 watts of power, day and night. Hydroponics basins are placed on the ground, and work both indoors and outdoors. For example, rice gets the full 280% effect, while potatoes won't benefit nearly as much. The exact speed boost depends on the Fertility Sensitivity of the plant in question. They require 100 Steel, 1 Component, 2,800 ticks ( 46.67 secs) of work, and a Construction skill of 4.Ī powered hydroponics basin acts as a terrain with 280% soil fertility, twice that of rich soil. Hydroponics basins can be constructed once the Hydroponics research project has been completed. 8/8/2023 0 Comments Jasmin in aladinIn doing so, Jasmine displays her intelligence and cleverness enough to outsmart Aladdin (who is cunning himself). She recognizes him from the day in the marketplace and tricks him into mentioning Abu to prove it. Jasmine sees through Aladdin's disguise when he pretends to be a prince. Despite her inexperience, she is a fast learner. As she spends the day in the marketplace, she meets Aladdin and learns to vault from one rooftop to another through a quick demonstration. When she overhears Aladdin (in his prince disguise) and her father talking about her, she insists that she "is not a prize to be won." Jasmine showcases her spunk and resourcefulness when she runs away from the palace to experience life beyond the palace walls. She refuses every suitor her father finds for her, sending them away in a hurry - and she knows her worth. Jasmine isn't the focus of the film, yet her willful defiance earned her a place in the Disney Princess lineup. When Aladdin shows up in disguise, Jasmine wants nothing to do with him, but she discovers that he is the same boy from the marketplace, and her tune changes. But according to tradition, Jasmine can only marry a prince. She sneaks out of the palace, meets Aladdin, and falls in love. Her father wants her to hurry up and marry, but Jasmine doesn't want to marry for anything short of love. She longs for freedom, feeling trapped and sheltered by the palace with only her pet tiger, Rajah, for a friend. Jasmine may be a secondary character, but she is given a strong plotline throughout the movie. Even though the plot revolves around Aladdin, Jasmine carves out her identity as a strong and independent princess. In rewrites, Jasmine was made a stronger character, but she still received limited time. This idea was thrown out, and Jasmine became the princess and the love interest. At first, the princess would have been a brat for comedic relief, and Aladdin would have a tomboy love interest who he ultimately chooses over the princess. In the original concept, she wasn't even going to be that. Since becoming an official Disney Princess, some have labeled her a female lead or referred to Jasmine and Aladdin as the protagonists, but Jasmine plays the role of a secondary character and the love interest. Instead, that role goes to Aladdin ( Scott Weinger). However, it could also be because Jasmine’s story, as well as Naomi Scott’s presence, commands our attention away from her love interest and, more impressively, away from the magical blue guy who’s one of the biggest stars in the world.Jasmine didn't get the chance to be the hero of her story. That may be in part because, if you’ve seen Aladdin, his story isn’t that different than the original, but Jasmine’s is. What Aladdin does the most successfully is literally turn Jasmine into a living, breathing person whose journey is more inspiring than that of the title character. And when Jafar grows in power and threatens to deny her own power completely, it starts to become unclear who’s the hero, Aladdin or the princess fighting for justice, agency and voice. She’s a three-dimensional woman who is scared and angry and vulnerable during the story. And because Scott so perfectly embodies the role, none of this feels like feminist lip service. She’s arguably the most intelligent person in the room during most of her scenes, and that includes those she shares with her father, Jafar and Aladdin. RELATED: Every Song in Disney's Aladdin Live-Action Remakeīut Jasmine’s arc doesn’t stop at her song. RELATED: Aladdin Conjures Disney's Best Live-Action Remake This is a situation the live-action remake neatly does away with. They’d always start out looking for a whole new world, but by the end of the movies their priorities would shift to romance, with no mention of their desires for knowledge and exploration were made after that fact. Yes, it’s a cartoon, and, no, we aren't meant to think about its implications, but Jasmine was indicative of a broader trend in Disney princess stories that depicted them as independent, but only nominally so. This is a street urchin, mind you, who was probably illiterate. The original Jasmine, while kind, smart and hungry for exploration, marries a pauper who will presumably become Sultan when her father dies. All three were headstrong and curious, yet primarily concerned with finding their prince. The original story featured an independent princess in the tradition of Belle and Ariel, who were far from blushing ingenues like Sleeping Beauty or Snow White. 8/8/2023 0 Comments Sound control switchYou can choose which sounds play for notifications and system events (for example, the sound that plays when you get a new message). There is an iOS version and an Android ap. But I think the best landscape app for night photography is Stellarium. PhotoPills and Sun Surveyor are very good general planning apps. I captured the shot below before sunrise on that date.ġ0. On May 27th 2017 at 2:30 AM, I had more luck. September 3rd 2016 at 11 PM, which turned out to be an overcast night. Two moonless weekends came up through Sun Surveyor. I wanted to find out if the Milky Way center would be visible over the length of the Dutch beach. Here, I stood in a floodplain at my local beach. At any location in the world, you can use Sun Surveyor (and PhotoPills too) to plan ahead of your back country shoots. But I used the app about a year in advance. I used Sun Surveyor at the beach for the tracked Milky Way shot below. That’s when the Milky Way center is high in the sky. That has everything to do with the fact that it doesn’t go completely dark in summer here. At my resident latitude, the Milky Way is most visible during very particular dates and specific times during the day. But actually, I find it most useful when planning nightscapes. Sun Surveyor is one of the all-around best landscape apps out there. That’s fantastic if you want the sun in a very specific area in your photo. This means you can see where the sun will rise for instance. You can drag the time to the past or future. Live-view in Sun Surveyor shows you an overlay of the path a celestial object follows along the sky. But there’s also live-view augmented reality feature. There’s a map with your geographic location and the direction of the sun, moon and even the Milky Way center. Sun Surveyor was released earlier on Android.īoth photography apps have more or less the same feature set and are available on both iOS and Android now. There’s just one reason why I use Sun Surveyor over PhotoPills. Best App for the Moon or Sunrise: Sun Surveyor (or PhotoPills) I use another app for Android for exactly this. Then I combined it with a telephoto shot of the blood Moon to dramatise the end result.īut there was one key part missing in planning this shoot: The exact point on the horizon where the moon would rise. I ended up taking a wide-angle shot of sea buckthorn for the foreground. This eclipse might have been the longest in over a century, but I was in quite a hurry. gave me the exact time I needed. Between the moment I observed the Moon slide out from the cloud cover at 22:50 and the end of totality at 23:13 local time. But there was a big band of clouds blocking the moon-rise. So I put myself in a rather familiar area with a clear view of the eastern horizon and a bit of a foreground. And that the fully eclipsed Blood Moon would rise in the east. That means I knew that the eclipse had already reached totality when the moon rose. This is called the moon illusion and it played a part in the idea behind the Blood Moon shot below. When the moon is near the horizon, it looks bigger and brighter than when it’s high up in the sky. The best time to enjoy a blood moon or indeed any full moon, is after moon-rise, when the moon is close to the horizon. I primarily use this app for planning lunar and solar eclipses many years in advance. Time and Date offers an ephemeris for any place in the world in handy to use calendar tables. I have yet to find any dedicated landscaping app for either Android or iOS that is so feature rich. Best Apps for Landscape Photographers During an Eclipse: Time and Date |
